SEEEM update

The SEEEM project for the global harmonization of motor standards was launched in June 2006 at EEDAL'06 in London. It was terminated at the Motor Summit 2008 on 24 November 2008 in Zurich Switzerland.

Please go to the IEA 4E EMSA project at www.motorsystems.org for future reference.

IEA 4E: Electric Motor Systems Annex

The International Energy Agency IEA in Paris has launched a new Implementing Agreement IEA 4E (Efficient Electrical End-Use Equipment) that includes an Electric Motor Systems Annex EMSA. So far 12 countries participate. More info: www.motorsystems.org

If your country is interested to participate actively please send an Email to cub@ABinternational.ch.

Motor Summit 2008

SEEEM together with S.A.F.E. and SwissEnergy held the second Motor Summit in Zurich Switzerland on 24 to 26 November 2008. The conference was held in three major events:

  • International Strategy Day (language English), 25 November 2008
  • Swiss Implementation Day (language German and English), 26 November 2008
  • Side event for working groups of SEEEM, EuP and IEA 4E, 24 November 2008

IEC Energy Efficiency Classes

On 22 October 2008 IEC has officially published the new IEC 60034-30 Ed. 1 "Efficiency Classes of single-speed three-phase cage induction motors (IE code)" .
If you want to receive a copy: www.iec.ch
Direct contact to the IEC TC 2/WG 31 chairman: martin.doppelbauer@sew-eurodrive.de

Please attend the Motor Summit 2008 in Zurich to get the full information on the new standard, register at: www.seeem.org

New IEC drafts

At present the following IEC drafts are under review or just newly published:

  • IEC 60034-2-1: Testing standard, published: 10 September 2007, order at: www.iec.ch
  • Round-Robin test campaign for motors (see news below).
  • IEC 60034-31: Guide for the selection and application of energy-efficient motors including variable-speed applications, IEC/WG 31 has published a first draft. Comments until 5 September 2009 to your national committee.
  • IEC 60034-30 Ed. 1: Efficiency Classes,  published on 22 October 2008, order at: www.iec.ch
  • IEC 60034-2-3: Testing standard for converter-fed AC machines: first draft has been discussed at IEC/WG 28 meeting on 10/11 April 2008.
  • IEC 60034-20-2: Guide for the performance and testing of Brushless Permanent magnet servo motors. Draft 17 August 2007.

If you need a draft document for motor standards during the reviewing period send an email to your national IEC/TC 2 Committee or directly to info@seeem.org.

IEC launches Round Robin Test
IEC has launched a Round-Robin test campaign for electric induction motors. The aim of the project is:

- to collect further experience with the test methods,
- to obtain sets of test data allowing to assess measurement deviations between laboratories,
- to eventually improve and optimize test procedures standardized in IEC 60034-2-1,
- to provide a basis for reviewing the tolerance limits in IEC 60034-1.
So far 21 laboratories in 9 countries have agreed to participate. If you are also interested to participate please contact the project manager Robert Bartheld (rbartheld@aol.com).
You can get the intermediary report from 27 June 2008 below.

EuP Eco Motors

In the context of the European Directive on Energy-Using Products EuP a project Lot 11 Eco Motors has been launched. Partners in the technical project are:

  • Hugh Falkner (AEA/UK) pumps
  • Anibal De Almeida (University of Coimbra/Portugal) motors
  • Charles Gaisford (AEA/UK) circulators
  • Peter Radgen (ISI/Germany) fans

The technical papers have been published: they can now be downloaded below.
A Consultation Forum meeting was held on 27 May 2008 in Brussels where the EC proposals for motor MEPS were discussed:

  • IE2 in 2011
  • IE3 in 2015

The next step is the impact assessement analysis.

US Congress adopts MEPS for NEMA Premium

US Congress has adopted on 14 December 2007 the new energy bill that asks for NEMA Premium electric motors to become MEPS within 3 years.
In a joint statement NEMA and ACEEE had asked Congress on 27 March 2007 to do so.

IEC decision on testing methods
IEC has published the new testing method for electric motor efficiency IEC 60034-2-1 on 10 September 2007. If you want a copy you can order at www.iec.ch.
This new global standard includes several testing methods, all of them take stray load losses into account. The methods are classified according to their level of uncertainty. For good results you always choose a method with a "low" level of uncertainty.
IEC has launched a worldwide Round-Robin of induction motors - see information below. Robert Bartheld (rbartheld@alo.com) has been assigned project manager. If you want to participate please contact the pm.
